The monthly rhythm

Four stages, every month.

01reveal
Stage one · the first of the month

The country & the book

We name the country we're reading and the book that opens it — here and on Instagram. Nothing is gated behind a form; the reading is public from day one.

02read
Stage two · the month

A month inside one country

The book reaches everyone in the community, with no limit on where you live. Publications, Substacks and video essays follow through the month, and the conversation runs online beside them.

03form
Stage three · the Friday before

The form opens

Registration for the twelve seats opens on the Friday before the sitting and closes at midnight on the Saturday. It isn't a race — everyone knows the date. Signing it is how you say the book is finished and you'll be in the room.

04sit
Stage four · the last Sunday

The sitting

Twelve annotators meet in person, each having read the whole book, and work through the Line, the Friction and the Mirror. Closing notes may be published in My Marginalia, with credit.

The method, expanded

Read. Question. Reply.

Every sitting, no matter the country or the book, moves through the same three prompts, in the same order. Repetition is the point — it's what lets a stranger's answer surprise you a year in.

Page / language

The Line

“What sentence stopped you?”
underline it
World / power

The Friction

“What made you uncomfortable?”
don't smooth it over
Self / recognition

The Mirror

“What part of yourself did you not want to come to terms with?”
look twice
Questions annotators ask first

Before you apply

How do I get the Reading of the sitting for that month ?

Anyone who would like a copy of the book is to reach out to us in our dm’s on any of our social media accounts with their personal details including WhatsApp number and pronouns as the epub and pdf version of the book would be shared on the Her Margins group on WhatsApp.

Who is welcome at the Sitting ?

Cisgender women, transgender women, and non-binary people who relate to womanhood, including lesbian, bisexual, and queer women. The room is for anyone who moves through the world as a woman, or whose life has been shaped by that experience.

Who is not welcome at the Sitting ?

Cisgender men. This isn’t about excluding allies, it’s about protecting a space where women can speak without translating themselves for a male audience.

How do I actually get a seat?

The monthly form for our sittings is announced every last Friday of the month and the sitting happens every last Sunday of the month. Each sitting only takes 12 Annotators and when the form goes live, it’ll be announced on our social media platforms.

What does it cost?

Her margins is currently running cost free but you can come with snacks that’ll serve as light refreshment during the Sitting.

Where do you meet?

Our precise location for our sittings cannot be disclosed on here but the location is Surulere, Lagos state

What if I fall behind on the reading?

There is no pressure on anyone to read every page of the book but it is imperative that anyone who would be a part of the sitting to have read every inch of the book with deliberate intention which is why the form doesn’t go out until the last week of the month so you can decide before claiming a seat if you’re prepared enough for the conversation.
